Kamala Harris Breaks Tiebreaker Vote Record
Vice President Kamala Harris has made history by casting the most tiebreaking votes in the U.S. Senate. She surpassed a nearly 200-year-old record set by John C. Calhoun, who served as vice president from 1825 to 1832. Harris has now broken 32 ties, beating the previous record.
Her most recent tiebreaking vote was on the nomination of Loren Alikhan to be a U.S. district judge for Washington, D.C. As the vice president, Harris holds the constitutional power to break ties in the Senate. Her votes have been crucial for passing significant legislation, including the Inflation Reduction Act and the American Rescue Plan.
In recognition of this achievement, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer presented Harris with a golden gavel. It’s worth noting that during the 117th Congress, the Senate was evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, making tiebreaker votes more frequent.
Kudos to Vice President Harris for her historic contributions!
